Undergraduate Advising Handbook
Advising
All students must fulfill all of the requirements for graduation as described
in the St. John Fisher College Bulletin in effect for the year in which they
enter the College. For transfer students, that Bulletin is indicated on
the Transfer Credit Evaluation.
The requirements are as follows:
- Complete a minimum of 120 credit hours.
A substitution for or waiver of a specific requirement approved by an
academic department in no way reduces this credit minimum. Transfer
students, especially, find that they may need to complete more than
120 credit hours in order to meet all degree requirements.
- Liberal Arts requirement
- At least 90 hours of the credits for the BA degree must be in
the Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- At least 60 hours of the credits for the BS degree must be in
the Liberal Arts and Sciences.
At Fisher, courses in the following disciplines are not considered
to be Liberal Arts:
- Accounting, Accounting Law
- Management, Corporate Finance
- Nursing
- Education and MSTI courses involving Teaching Methods
- Some of the Interdisciplinary and Sport Studies Courses
In addition, many transfer courses do not meet the liberal arts requirements. Computer Science, Communications, and Arts courses are examples
of transfer courses whose liberal arts content is reviewed individually.
Questions regarding whether any course is considered
liberal arts should be referred to the Registrar’s Office.
- Overall, Major and Minor GPA’s of 2.00 are
Required
A cumulative grade point average of 2.00 for all courses taken in residence
at St. John Fisher College is required. Grade point averages are not
rounded.A grade point of average of 2.00 is also required for courses
taken in the declared major(s) and minor(s). Please refer to the appropriate
academic section in the College Bulletin for each department’s description
of courses which are used to determine grade point averages in the major
and/or minor.
- Satisfy the Residency Requirement.
The residency requirement has two components:
- A minimum of 30 graded credit hours must be taken at St. John
Fisher College in order to earn a Bachelor’s degree. This requirement
usually applies to students who have transferred large amounts
of credit, or students attending Fisher who have earned degrees
elsewhere.
- For all students, at least 30 of the last 36 credit hours must
be earned in residence unless waived by the
Committee on Academic Standing. This means that once a student has
begun the last 36 hours of a particular degree program, only 6 of
those hours may be taken in transfer.
- Complete the requirements for a declared Major program.
Please refer to the appropriate section of the College Bulletin for
course requirements. Often, courses taken to complete the major may
also meet other requirements, such as the College Core.
Note: At least one half of the required credits
in the major must be completed at St. John Fisher College unless waived in writing
by the Department Chair and Provost or his designee.
A waiver or substitution of a requirement within the major must be
formalized in writing on a Substitution/Waiver Form approved by the
Department Chair and submitted to the Registrar.
- Complete the College Core requirements
Note that all entering Freshmen beginning Fall 2006 and all entering
transfer students beginning in Fall 2007 are required to follow the
New Core Tier I and II requirements described in detail in the 2006-2007
College Bulletin and on the Advising Handbook
website. All other students must follow the traditional Core
requirements which are also described in the College Bulletin.Transfer
students, depending on the number and type of credits originally transferred,
may receive Core exemptions. Specific Core exemptions will be
indicated on the Transfer Credit Evaluation.
- Complete the requirements for a declared Minor program
***A minor is required for all students seeking a
Bachelor of Arts degree ***
Minor programs may require specific courses and include specific
restrictions, such as defining the number of courses which may overlap
with the major. Refer to the appropriate academic section in the College Bulletin for
each set of minor requirements.
A waiver or substitution of a requirement within the minor must be
formalized in writing on a Substitution/Waiver Form approved by the
Department Chair of the minor program and submitted to the Registrar.
- Petition to Graduate
All potential graduating seniors must file a Petition to Graduate by the following
deadlines:
- May Certification ……………December 1st
- August Certification……………February 1st
- December Certification…………September 1st
Failure to meet these deadlines may result in a delay in graduation.
* August and December potential graduates who will need no more than six (6)
credits to complete their degree requirements at the end of the spring semester
may request permission to attend the May ceremony by completing a Petition
to Graduate.
* Students in Adolescence, Childhood or Special Education majors may participate in the May ceremony provided they have earned at least 114 credits by the
end of the spring semester and have only the student teaching semester to complete.
- The Senior Audit
Students planning to graduate in the spring should contact the Registrar's
Office beginning the previous June 1 to request a senior audit of their academic
record to ensure that all requirements will be fulfilled by the expected date of
graduation. Seniors planning to be
within 6 credit hours of degree completion by the end of the spring semester
are eligible to graduate.
Other students planning to complete all degree requirements by the end of the
fall semester may request a senior audit beginning March 19th of the previous
year.
Students requesting a senior audit must have their full programs (major(s),
concentration(s) and/or minor(s) as applicable) declared and must be
able to provide the Registrar’s Office with the year of the College Bulletin being
followed.
