Standards of Academic Progress

In order to graduate from St. John Fisher College, a student must earn a 2.00 cumulative grade point average for all courses taken in residence at the College. Therefore, the Grade Point Averages of students are monitored as they advance from one semester to another in relation to the 2.00 mark. The Academic Standing of a student is based on the cumulative end of term Grade Point Average (Cum GPA) and falls into one of the categories of the following chart:

* Averages will not be "rounded." For example, 1.49 will not be rounded to 1.50. Therefore, 1.49 will be within the academic disqualification range.

** Includes all hours (SJFC and transfer hours) applied toward the St. John Fisher College Bachelor's degree. However, only Fisher credits are used in calculating the grade point average.

Good Standing

Matriculated students who are not placed on an Academic Contract are considered to be in good standing.

Warning

Students with a cumulative GPA within the appropriate Warning range, while considered to be in Good Standing for NCAA eligibility, are placed in the Warning category to indicate that their academic performance is not completely acceptable.

Early Intervention Academic Contract

Students with a cumulative GPA within the Early Intervention Contract range are required to design an Academic Contract with a counselor in the Office of Academic Affairs. The number of credit hours a student may take may be limited. The Contract students are reviewed at the end of each semester by the Committee on Academic Standing and the student’s number of earned credit hours and cumulative GPA at the end of the semester on Contract will determine the standing for the following semester according to the Standards of Academic Progress Chart.

Post Dismissal Academic Contract

A student who is approved to return to the College by the Committee on Academic Standing after Academic Dismissal is placed on Post Dismissal Academic Contract. The student is required to design an Academic Contract with a counselor in the Office of Academic Affairs. These students must meet all of the conditions of the Academic Contract including achievement of a semester GPA of at least 2.00 to continue as a matriculated student. These Contract students are reviewed at the end of each semester by the Committee on Academic Standing to determine whether or not they may remain on Contract, may return to Good Standing, or are Academically Dismissed.

Athletic Participation & Academic Standing

Students whose end of term standing is Good Standing or Warning are considered to be making satisfactory academic progress and are eligible to participate on the College’s NCAA athletic teams. Students who are on either an Early Intervention or a Post-Dismissal Contract are not in good standing and ineligible to participate in NCAA athletics.

Students who move from a Contract category to Good Standing or Warning at the end of their semester on contract will be eligible to return to their athletic team.
