Disability Rights and Responsibilities
Student Rights
Students have the right to confidentiality in regard to their disability.
Documentation of disability is kept in a separate file in the Office
of Academic Affairs and is not included in the student's permanent file
in the Registrar's office. Information from the disability file will be disclosed
by the Coordinator
of Disability Services on an as-needed basis. Information regarding
specific diagnosis or medication information will be released only with
the written permission of the student. Students can choose to disclose
that information to faculty on their own, but should not
be asked by faculty, staff or administration the exact nature or diagnosis
of their condition. Documentation of disability is kept in OAA for five
years from the date the student graduates or leaves the College.
Student Responsibilities
Students who request academic/housing accommodation(s) due to disability have the responsibility to:
- self-identify their disability status in a timely manner to
the Coordinator of Disability Services
- provide documentation that is appropriate, relevant and complete,
per the guidelines outlined on the
SJFC Policy on Accommodations
- submit a signed Release of Confidential
Information Form (PDF)
- maintain the academic standards required of all St. John Fisher
College students
- comply with the St. John Fisher College Code of Conduct
Faculty Rights
OAA welcomes faculty input on the provision of accommodations in their classroom. Feedback from faculty lets the Coordinator know how well an accommodation is working for a student and also lets the Coordinator know if there is an issue other than disability that is affecting student performance. By working collaboratively we insure the integrity of a St. John Fisher College education.
Faculty have the right to:
- determine the curricula for their courses
- determine student progress and assign grades
- be informed if students in their classes need accommodations
- provide input regarding the accommodations employed in their
classrooms
Faculty Responsibilities
In keeping with the College's non-discrimination policy, each faculty member should:
- notify students that accommodations are available and are coordinated
through OAA by including a statement on the syllabi which is distributed
on the first day of class
- provide an atmosphere in which students have an equal opportunity
to learn course material
- privately discuss accommodation requests with the student and
report concerns or changes to the Coordinator
- contact the Coordinator with questions regarding the appropriateness
of an accommodation. Continue to provide the accommodation while
the issue is being resolved
- provide accommodations in a fair and timely manner. Providing
accommodations is not negotiable; however the way the accommodations
are provided is negotiable.
- order textbooks as early as possible so that the student/Coordinator
can locate text in alternate format as needed
- keep students with disabilities in mind when making special
class arrangements such as field trips
Shared Responsibilities
- Students have the first responsibility to report their needs
to the faculty in a timely manner
- Students who wait until the day of an exam to request extended
time or alternate location have failed to make the request in a
timely manner
- If the student waits until late in the semester to request test
services, the faculty is only required to provide accommodations
from that time forward and is not required to offer make up
exams, alter past
grades, etc.
- Faculty may not discourage students from specific fields of
study. However, students must meet the admission requirements
and maintain the grades and qualifications as defined by their
academic program.
