International Student Services Traveling Outside of the United States

Visits Abroad and Re-entry to the U.S. in F-1 Status

Whenever an F-1 student wishes to leave the U.S. temporarily and return to continue studies at the institution in which he or she is enrolled, he or she must secure the necessary documents to a) permit entry to another country and b) permit re-entry to the United States. A student should always check with the Embassy of the country he or she would like to visit to inquire about entry regulations.

Basic Requirements for Re-entry to the U.S.

A student who has been out of the U.S. for less than five months must be able to provide the following to be eligible for re-entry:

  • A current SEVIS I-20, properly endorsed for travel by the DSO. It is also recommended that students have all previous I-20 documents issued since first attending St. John Fisher College, including the I-20 with visa stamp. Please note: the travel signature on pg. 3 of the I-20 is good for one year from the date on which it was last signed, or for six months for students authorized for optional practical training.
  • A valid passport, valid for at least six months after the date of re-entry
  • A valid F-1 visa

It is also recommended that students have with them:

  • Evidence of financial resources (certificate of finances)
  • Evidence of student status (course schedule, transcript, student bill, etc.)
  • Name and contact information of the Designated School Official (DSO)

Bringing your most recent I-94 Departure Card will facilitate your re-entry if re-entering through a land port of entry. If you are flying, the airline will collect your I-94 prior to departure and you will complete a new one upon re-entry.
