CONFERENCES spacer Sport Management

Sportsmanship ConferenceA major part of the sport management program is providing services to the local community in a number of formats. Within the past 7 years, the sport management program has developed a sportsmanship conference where local high school-aged students have the opportunity to engage their peers and others affiliated with sport about numerous topics relating to the larger discussion of sportsmanship. Over the past few years, pupils have been able to enjoy the insight from a variety of stakeholders within the sport industry. Here is a brief history of the conference:

7th Annual Conference on Sportsmanship

Canceled due to a snowstorm that closed local schools.

6th Annual Conference on Sportsmanship

6th Sportsmanship Conference 6th Sportsmanship ConferenceThe sixth annual Conference on Sportsmanship, hosted by the Sport Studies Department, was held in March, 2006. This year representatives from 31 schools from the Section V region took part in the conference. The region encompasses the city of Rochester, Monroe County, the counties along the Genesee, and the western Finger Lakes region reaching to the Pennsylvania border.

The featured presentation was given by David Epperson, Ph.D., and George Selleck, Ph.D., co-founders of “Parents for Good Sports,” based in Texas.

Scott Bryson, Sportsmanship Conference Coordinator, explained that this year’s conference was different from the first five events. “This was the first year that we had the stakeholders from each school system present: athletic directors, coaches, parents, and athletes.” Epperson and Selleck challenged the group to create an environment that would encourage communication and support.

5th Annual Conference on Sportsmanship

The 5th annual Conference on Sportsmanship was held on Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Nearly 250 students from the City of Rochester and Monroe County participated in the event, which explored the values that participation in sports can teach. Special guest speakers were J.P. Losman, starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, and the Bills’ quarterbacks coach, NFL veteran Sam Wyche. Sponsored by the Sport Studies Department, the Conference was deemed a success by all who attended.

4th Annual Conference on Sportsmanship

The fourth annual Conference on Sportsmanship took place on Thursday, March 4,2004. Over 200 high school students from the Section V area, representing 27 schools, participated in the day-long event. This year, students explored the use of team slogans and the role they play in enhancing sportsmanship. Each student team created a slogan, which was presented to the entire assembly. They then voted for the slogan to represent Section V. The winning slogan was "Sportsmanship Shows the Character of a True Champion."Sport Studies department chair, Michael Gibbons, conference coordinator Scott Bryson, and adjunct instructor Woody Greene led the activities of the conference. Students in Woody Greene's class, Community Service Learning for Sport Managers, acted as team facilitators. Jim Aroune of RNews led a group discussion among students, some of which was aired on RNews that day.

3rd Annual Conference on Sportsmanship

On Wednesday, March 5, 2003, Fisher held a Conference on Sportsmanship—its third annual conference on contemporary issues in sport, sponsored by the Sport Studies Department.  This year’s Conference explored the role of athletics in teaching values.  Students identified the values that sports teach and examined how these values translate to life “off the field.”  Mr. Steve Tasker, former Buffalo Bill and sports analyst for The NFL on CBS, was the keynote speaker at the event.  Over 200 high school students from the City of Rochester and Monroe County were on hand to hear what sports professionals, administrators, and industry experts had to say about the topic.  Students left campus having created a personal sportsmanship pledge to take back to their respective schools and implement.

In the evening, Mac Bledsoe, motivational speaker and father of Buffalo Bills quarterback Drew Bledsoe, spoke on “Parenting, Athletics, and Values.”  Bledsoe is also the founder of the Parenting with Dignity™ Program, which helps parents instill positive behavior and good decision-making skills in their children.
